Josh Jensen, the man with the studded suit jacket, is a Californian wine legend. A Rhodes Scholar in the late 60's, Oxford rowing Blue and confirmed Burgundy-phile. After blagging a job at DRC (by offering to pick grapes and do any cellar work going) he discovered that soil type was vital to the success of Pinit Noir. Josh scoured California looking for a limestone-rich cool climate site in which to recreate the Cote d'Or. It took him two years to find it but in 1974 Josh stumbled across Mount Harlan, 90 miles south of San Francisco. He planted his first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay a year later. The fact that there was no road or no power was not going to put him off. More than three decades on, Calera is recognized as one of California's very best producers for these grapes. As Robert Parker says Calera is "one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists not only in the new world, but on Planet Earth." The San Francisco Chronicle voted him Winemaker of the Year 2007, saying "His limestone quest yielded what can unequivocally be called one of California's grand crus."
Bright, just-picked red cherries, plums and blackberries on the nose with sweet spices added in for good measure. Smooth and elegant with juicy fruit, ripe tannins and fresh acidity characterize the palate. Classic Californian Pinot with superb balance between ripeness and freshness. Very young at present. It will be interesting to watch this evolve.
