Champagne Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 1999

Sir Winston Churchill had a lifelong 'attachment' to Pol Roger champagne and insisted on enjoying the wine at the most dangerous and dark periods of wartime. He famously borrowed a slogan of Napoleon's to describe his passion for this supremely invigorating champagne: "In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it". It is made in a style which Churchill himself favoured: robust, mature and long-lived.

Trinity Hill Homage Syrah 2007, Hawkes Bay

Gerard Jaboulet, from that famed Rhone estate, provided some of the vine cuttings and much of the inspiration for a wine that is dedicated to his memory. Strongly spicy Syrah with dense, sweet fruit forming a solid core. The wine offers an impressive array of flavours. In addition to the black pepper and star anise there is violets, toast, coffee, blackcurrants and plum. Big but supple with impressive potential. A relatively high proportion of Viognier (9%) adds to the wine’s elegance and lifted aromatics. 19.5/20 5 Stars, Decanter Magazine.

Gaja Conteisa 2005, Piemonte

A 15 acre part of the Cerequio vineyard in the commune of La Morra bought by Gaja in 1995. Conteisa is the Piedmontese word for quarrel, and is a reference to the dispute between the communes of La Morra and Barolo over possession of the Cerequio land. 8% of Barbera is added to the Nebbiolo, and the wine is characterized by its sumptuous texture, sweetness of fruit and perfectly integrated tannins.

Gaja Sperss 2005, Piemonte

Angelo bought these 30 acres of Barolo vines in 1988, in the Marenca-Rivette area, in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. His family had bought the grapes of this vineyard for many years until 1961, when the decision was taken to make wines only from Gaja vines. For this reason, Angelo named the vineyard Sperss: the Piedmontese word for nostalgia. There is 6% of Barbera in this dense and beautifully integrated cuvée, noted for its richness, complexity and tremendous longevity.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia 'Ornellaia' Double Magnum 2007. Tuscany

Boxed Double Magnum.  The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage.  Its glossy style and up-front fruit means that that the vintage will show well earlier than many Ornellaia vintages.  However, that isn't a diplomatic way of saying that the wine is simple or light.  This is a deeply concentrated and rich Ornellaia, just one with elevated fruit and soft, ripe tannins.

Established in 1871, Bruno Giacosa is the third generation of his family to produce wine in this Neive estate and has worked in these family cellars since he was a very young man during World War II. Produced from estate-owned vineyards, Gaja’s Barbaresco has deep, complex fruit flavours supported by refreshing acidity and firm tannins and although it has the capacity to age for 20 or more years, the wine can be appreciated within a few years of bottling. The 2007 is an outstanding expression of the vintage.  The style of the wine is more opulent and forward than the 2006 vintage but it is also very elegant, complex and persistent and one of the finest examples made by Gaja. The 2007 Costa Russi is an outstanding effort from Gaja. The bouquet is rich and multi-layered with notes of black fruits, dark cherries, spices and herbs. The palate is extremely ripe and deep but very elegant with fine, harmonious tannins. Deep red berry fruit is intermingled with notes of sage, dried herbs and flowers and the finish is very long and persistent. It will evolve into a multi-layered wine with immense finesse, but will be delicious in a few years time due to the powerful fruit.

The complexity of Gaja’s wines reach their pinnacle in this wine, the quintessential expression of Nebbiolo.  This is a very serious wine indeed and it has the potential to age for 30 or more years.
