Champagne Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 1999

Sir Winston Churchill had a lifelong 'attachment' to Pol Roger champagne and insisted on enjoying the wine at the most dangerous and dark periods of wartime. He famously borrowed a slogan of Napoleon's to describe his passion for this supremely invigorating champagne: "In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it". It is made in a style which Churchill himself favoured: robust, mature and long-lived.

Based in Epernay, this fine Champagne house dates back to 1822.  They have been making elegant and delicious Champagne from their own vines since 1949 and by the early 1980s demand for their wines had grown to such an extent that like all grand houses they started also buying grapes from other high quality growers in the region in order to produce enough Champagne to satisfy demand. Their first rose was released in 1976.

Champagne Pol Roger Brut Rose Vintage 2002

Optimum 2010 - 2017

A full-bodied, vintage champagne made from 50% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 16% vin Rouge de Champagne. 13% still Pinot Noir from the village of Chouilly is added to the final blend before the second fermentation starts to give it its characteristic colour.

Champagne Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2000

Optimum 2010 - 2017

2000 was a vintage that "came right" at the last minute, thanks to a fine Indian Summer. Made in only limited quantities the Brut Vintage 2000 was aged for 9 years in the Pol Roger cellars before being released to the market. It has a very striking Pinot Noir nose, huge ripeness and complexity, with great weight and richness, serious back-bone with fine length and spiced concentration. As ever, Pol Vintage is great.

This fine Epernay produced 'Carte Blanche' is a pale, satin, golden-yellow colour and has a lovely effervescence. Its fruity nose quickly reveals hints of freshness (apples, grapefruit), yellow-fleshed fruit (mirabelle plumbs) and hazelnuts, and is wonderfully smooth on the palate. This Brut Classique from Alfred Gratien is made up of 45% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Meunier and 12% Pinot Noir and undergoes fermentation in barrique. Known as the "insiders' Krug" Gratien is a lovely stylish Champagne.
