Zinfandel.
Pronounced Zinn-fan-dell
If you've come to this page looking for the pale, vaguely pink, vaguely orange coloured semi-sweet wines produced by Californian mega-corps, who should know better, then we're afraid you will be leaving somewhat dissapointed.
In our world Zinfandel (a genetic twin to Italy's Primotivo grape) produces full-throttle, expansive red wines that are most definitely not for the faint-hearted wine drinker. Nowhere more so than in California where approaching 10% of land under-vine is producing 'Zin' and where it has recently been declared the "national grape". Much to the consternation of the many producers of fine Cabernet Sauvignon, we might add! Capable of dizzying concentration and strength, Zinfandel is nevertheless a variety capable of proving elegance and complexity. Pioneers such as Paul Draper (Ridge) & Ted Seghesio have proved, without doubt, that Zinfandel deserves a seat at the wine world's top table.
