By Ed Wells
Back in September I visited a domain in the Cotes du Rhone village of Cairanne. Cairanne is clearly one of the outstanding villages in the region, situated approximately 15kms north east of Orange and is surrounded by other exceptional villages including Rasteau, Seguret, Sablet and Roaix. In this month’s new Decanter Magazine (March 2017) the tasting panel conducted a tasting of 103 wines from this region and I was delighted to see that one of my favoured wines from the visit made the top ten and was rated as Highly Recommended with a score of 90/100. At from £13.99 the value for money is typical of the region. Ed Wells.

Domaine Boutinot
Cairanne ‘Les Six’ 2014.

image002.jpeg

The name ‘Les Six’ comes from the fact that the domaine introduces 6 varieties into the blend, some familiar, others less so. Most CdR have just 3 but these combine beautifully to make one superb Cairanne. So in a way, in an appellation often dominated by just two varieties, ‘Les Six’ is a new style of Cairanne which, due to the ancient varieties of Carignan Noir (10%), Cinsault (10%) and Counoise (10%) included in the assemblage, is also a Cairanne whose heart holds dear the traditions of yesteryear. So, not defined by power, Les Six is all about elegance and the expression of six different grape varieties; soft red fruits gently seasoned with a touch of oak.

Decanter Magazine Note: The energy in this Cairanne is appealing; the palate bears blueberry fruit with a cool 2014 angle. It is authentic and powerful and ends with a fresh menthol grip. It drinks with gusto and finishes on tingling fennel notes. Drink 2017 to 2021.

Video: What better way to bring this alive than a short video clip of our visit to the domaine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRzHA5GdLQo

Further notes from Ed: You cannot deny the authenticity of this part of the Cotes du Rhone. It feels so incredibly permanent, with vines that look as old as the rocky landscape that supports them. The rolling slopes above the village of Cairanne are akin to an ancient library of well-established vineyards steeped in the classic terroir of chalky clay of the region and bristling with parcels of low-yielding old vines, some of which are very rare and ancient grape varieties. Not surprisingly hand-picking is order of the day with varieties co-fermented for greater complexity. Vinified by natural wild yeasts and aided by manual pigeage and gentle remontage this is classic old school Rhone winemaking. Les 6 is matured only in tronconiques (large oak vats) for 10 months. 2014 was cool (by Southern Rhone standards) so this will appeal to those who prefer more elegance and perfume in their wines, over depth and power. To me it’s a classic old school CdR.

Food Recommendations: This wine has a natural affinity with herby lamb dishes but would be superb with most grilled meats and roasted vegetable dishes.
