This is a brand new blend from Heidsieck, created by the skilful hand of Heidsieck’s new winemaker Thierry Roset. Roset must have some touch as he has successfully reinvented the wheel here, winning a Gold for his Brut and the overall trophy for the new Rose. Regis Camus director of vines and wines for both Piper and Charles Heidsieck put Roset in day-to-day control over Charles so he could concentrate on Piper. According to Camus ‘Roset has a clear sense of the house style. He has worked out how to build the wines with fewer crus, but using older reserve wines.’ The new rose blend is built on the new Brut Reserve blend, but instead of the 110-120 crus, there are now just 60. The reserve wines part of the blend now go back 15 years instead of eight and, with the addition of 6% red wine from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Les Riceys, the proportion of the varieties is 35% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Camus famously said: ‘Charles Heidsieck customers have to be born with patience!’ This may be true of the vintage wines but this NV being boosted by older reserve wines it drinks fabulously from release. That said, cellaring will be greatly rewarded.

Tasting Note: Sophisticated, seductive style, with an attractively fruity and lightly toasted nose. Baked strawberry fruit is harmonious on a fresh and vibrant palate, with pastry and biscuit notes. Good complexity and finesse. There is no doubt that this can now be considered the premier non-vintage rose of Champagne.

Champagne Charles Heidsieck

Charles Heidsieck is one of the great names of Champagne and produces some of the finest of all Champagne. Though started in 1851, the foundation of its modern fame rests on the work done by winemaker Daniel Thibault, whose style has come to define ‘Charles’. Thibault died in 2002 and was succeeded by his assitant Régis Camus. Between them they have won the ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ award at the International Wine Challenge a remarkable twelve times.

Thierry Roset is the current chef de cave, working with Camus. He continues with the approach that has driven their success, which is based on the relentless pursuit of quality. The base wines are made from a selection of the best vineyards of the region (rated up to 120). They are one of the few houses to own ‘crayeres’ or chalk cellars that run under Reims. In June 2011 Charles Heidsieck was bought by the Descours family and their aim is to revitalise Charles so that its image once again matches the quality of the wines.
