The Burgundy stars that are Sam and Leniac at Domaine Bachey-Legros have, for the first time, allocated us a small quantity of their fantastic Bourgogne Chardonnay, albeit just 10 dozen. It’s their most-affordable wine and not surprisingly it’s in serious demand around the world and, paradoxically, it’s their most viciously allocated. The team at Bachey-Legros seem to have the Midas touch at the moment - all of their wines are characterised by perfect balance, broad expression with refined Burgundian flavours.

Followers of this domaine already know how great their wines are.. This 2012 Bourgogne Chardonnay delivers far superior quality to many 'village' wines and this superb effort can easily hold its own amongst many Pulignys or Meursaults with their £35 price tags.

Their Bourgogne Chardonnay comes from their own vineyard situated in Santenay very close to Les Charmes, though in some vintages a little Chassagne-Montrachet from young vines is added. They crop at a low yield from superb soils that drain well with not too much clay. The site is not too humid and is mid slope like many of the better appellations in Puligny and Chassagne. They mature for 12 months in 100% in oak barrels with about 15% of these being new French new oak. In other words, they treat this like they treat their finest wines in Puligny.

The Bachey-Legros family has been producing wine in the region for six generations and the domaine now has an enviable 18 hectares across the Cotes de Beaune, including some new vineyards in Chassagne Montrachet. The cellar is located in the tiny village of Haut-Santenay and is now run by brothers Samuel and Lenaic, coordinated by their mother Christiane. The wines have taken on a new lease of life since the younger generation have come in, but have not lost any of their verve and charm, and retain their distinctive terroir characters. Both red and white the wines from this estate are defined by purity and elegance. No surprise that they are darlings of the Guide Hachette.
