As the sun shines for the first time in ages, we are absolutely chuffed to announce that, finally Gaznata MKII has arrived from Spain. If you missed out on the first vintage, then the second incarnation of this lovely wine, produced high in the mountains above El Barraco in the Gredos Mountains (by Dave) if full of gorgeous juicy fruit, but what Gredos is so good at producing is freshness in its wines. Making them an ideal summer red, 20 minutes in the fridge and it comes alive!

The Sierra de Gredos, if you have not been, should be on everyone’s tick list. Believe the hype, this is wild bear and wolf country of staggering mountainous beauty that has a colour palate all of its own.

The vineyards for Gaznata are located around the town of El Barraco which is up stream of the more famous wines of Jiminez Landi in the Madrid section and just an hour away from the capital.

El Barraco, was just another old coop where 50 euro cents buys you a litre of drink but thanks to Daniel Ramos, a young dynamic wine maker with an Australian accent but local roots, the coop is now turning itself around and producing a limited selection from the oldest vineyards in a range of wines that are startling good value.

This is all about Garnacha, of course, and the vines are in most cases a century old and planted between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level, on soils ranging from granite to sandy loam.

Whilst I am whole heartedly recommeding you enjoy this Gaznata now with a fork full of Marsh Pig Charcuterie, wine will develop nicely over the next few years in the bottle, we like to think that this sort of Grenache is akin to the sort of Grenache you find in the northern quarter of Chateauneuf.

Spontaneous pro-longed fermentation in large concrete tanks, with malolactic taking place in the spring when the large stone bodega begins to warm with the spring sun. Fined and lightly filtered. Some natural cold stabilization and precipitation takes place in the cold concrete tanks over the winter months.

Gaznata Joven is a fresh fruity and easy drinking young Garnacha. It is a deep garnet in colour, with blackberries, cherries and graphite on the nose. The palate is rich and supple with layers of fruit and a touch of spice. A nice fresh and lengthy finish.
