A visit to South Africa is almost guaranteed to be full of surprises but I really didn’t anticipate a Cape red knocking a world famous Bordeaux clean out of the park!

The two wines in question were Klein Constantia’s Estate Red 2014 tasted against Chateau Angelus 2007. The two wines are in fact related, in the fact that Angelus’s Hubert de Bouard is a partner and consultant at Klein Constantia. In fact he was part of the team who convinced the estate to give up on single varietal wines and produce a single, multi-variety Estate wine in something approaching the Bordeaux model. The decision was a wise one, because this wine is clearly much, much more than the sum of its parts and is far better than their past variety driven wines of old.

I tasted the two wines over dinner and to me it was clear which I preferred. And as you can buy twelve Klein Estate Red for the price of one Angelus I’m clearly a massive philistine! Sorry!!!

“Due to the warm and dry conditions we experienced in 2014, this vintage has great fruit expression. A lot of work and effort has been put into fine tuning our oak programme which is displayed in the delicate balance between fruit and oak in this wine. 2014 also sees the reintroduction of Shiraz to the Estate Red blend. Each parcel is carefully identified and blocks are split into multiple portions in order to harvest at the perfect ripeness. The grapes are then bunch and berry sorted to ensure that only the healthiest berries are selected. Malo-lactic fermentation takes place in 50 % new French oak barrels after alcoholic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months before blending and bottling.” Matt Day, Winemaker.

Alcohol: 13.46% vol
Composition: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Shiraz, 14% Petit Verdot & 9% Malbec

Intense red and black fruit with elegant notes of cinnamon spice on the nose. The palate is full bodied and savoury with a well-integrated oak component, ending with a long and rich finish. Notable balance and length. Very European in all aspects. Drink 2017-2025.
