The intensity and length of fruit of the wine was astonishing, showing Syrah at its purest and most drinkable. David has 18 hectares of vineyards lying on the terraces of the highly-regarded village of Beaumont Monteux, to the South of the town of Tain. David’s family used to sell their grapes to the Cooperative at Tain, but a wish to bottle his own production led him to establish his domaine in 2002. This also allowed him to farm his vineyards both organically and biodynamically, and all his wines are either certified as such or due for conversion in the next 1-2 years.

This wine was made from grapes grown on the estate of Domaine Les Bruyères in Beaumont-Monteux. The vineyards are situated on old Rhône river terraces constituted of clay, limestone and degraded pebbles which means excellent drainage. The age of the vines is between 20 to 30 years old and the estate is certified Organic and Biodynamic farming. No chemicals or artificial products are used in the fields or in the cellar. David works the fields by hand, debudding and green harvesting to ensure even ripeness and good aeration around the bunches of grapes. Yield for this wine was the equivalent of 35 hectoliters per hectare.

The grapes were harvested and sorted by hand then lowered into the winery by gravity to avoid damaging the flavour compounds, or releasing harsh tannins into the juice. The 2009 was fermented and macerated traditionally for nearly 30 days in cement tanks to encourage pure, primary fruit aromas. The cap was punched daily to ensure good flavour extraction. The skins were then pressed at low pressure before the wine was aged for 12 months in 2 to 3 year-old 228L oak barrels.

Deep, dark red. The nose has a mineral edge with elegant smoked notes and vibrant black fruits of blackcurrant and blackberries. The dark fruits continue on the palate with notes of liquorice, smoke, black olives and sweet spices on the finish. The tannins are thick, smooth and very appealing supporting a long finish.

More smoked herbs, roasted meats, bouquet garni, tapenade and liquorice aromas jump from the glass of the 2009 Crozes-Hermitage Georges Reynaud. This complex, evolved, delicious, sumptuous Crozes should drink nicely.

David Reynaud

To us these wines are nothing short of astonishing. The intensity and length of David’s Crozes Hermitage is astonishing, and his wines show the Syrah variety at its purest and most drinkable. David Reynaud’s family used to sell their grapes to the co-operative at Tain, but a wish to bottle his own production led David to establish his domaine in 2002. The original parcel of vines handed down to David by his family, from which his Crozes Hermitage ‘Georges Reynaud’ and ‘Les Croix’ are sourced, is certified organic and biodynamic. The 18 hectares of vines lie on chalky-clay terraces, with a significant quantity of pebble that allows good drainage. David works the vineyard by hand - debudding and carrying out a green harvest to ensure even ripeness and to aerate the vines.
