The Seghesio Zinfandels have been scooping Gold medals and Trophies for years now. Their accolades in the Decanter World Wine Awards and IWC prove to an international market that their Zins not only measure up to the competition, but are in the top rank.

Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, who‘s primary focus is on estate-grown wines from some of California and Oregon‘s most prestigious producers, Seghesio remains focused on its family roots, with Pete overseeing viticulture and his cousin Ted making the wines. Italian consultant Alberto Antonini has helped them over the years to improve the quality of their Sangiovese (sourced from the oldest Sangiovese vineyards in California) and his influence can also be seen in the ripe, juicy, approachable style of Zinfandel which has become their hallmark.

Vineyards
Grapes were primarily estate grown from Home Ranch, River Road, Lone Oak and San Lorenzo vineyards in Alexander Valley and from Cortina vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. Aggressive hand canopy management was maintained with a green harvest and veraison thinning to ensure even ripening.

Vintage information
2009 was a near ideal growing season with gradual ripening due to cooler than average temperatures. Tannins and flavours developed gradually without the usual heat spikes, but a warm September punctuated the vintage by bringing the fruit to full ripeness. Hand harvesting was carried out from 9th September – 8th October.

Vinification
During fermentation the must was divided into three parts and each was vinified in a different way. 25% of the grapes were punched down by hand in small open-top fermenters, 50% went under pump-over fermentation in closed-top stainless steel tanks with delestage and the remaining 25% was fermented in rotary-tank. Maceration lasted for 10 days. The wine was barrel aged for 10 months in 75% American (20% new) and 25% French oak.

On the nose aromas of raspberries and blackberries with Zinfandel’s typical briary spiciness. The palate displays flavours of wild berries with layered nuances of cracked pepper and a touch of creamy oak. Balanced and elegantly structured.

Raspberry, oak and vanilla aromas.  Juicy, concentrated, with weight and spice; vigorous and forceful.

The lusty 2009 Zinfandel offers elegant berry fruit, lots of peppery spice, medium to full-bodied flavours and impressive purity as well as richness.  Bravo!

Seghesio

Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, who‘s primary focus is on estate-grown wines from some of California and Oregon‘s most prestigious producers, Seghesio remains focused on its family roots, with Pete overseeing viticulture and his cousin Ted making the wines.

The astonishing concentration of flavours which they manage to achieve in their wines can be attributed to the age of their vineyards, some of which were established as far back as 1895. Italian consultant Alberto Antonini has helped them over the years to improve the quality of their Sangiovese (sourced from the oldest Sangiovese vineyards in California) and his influence can also be seen in the ripe, juicy, approachable style of Zinfandel which has become their hallmark.

The Seghesio wines have a freshness (they bottle early in order to preserve fruit) and a purity of fruit, balance and elegance that is difficult to achieve with Zinfandel. Although best known for their reds, Seghesio also produces a delicious Arneis, another traditional Italian variety, which is sealed under Stelvin to retain its superb aromatic character.
